Facilitating the consumer decision-making process for re-use and repair

Brook Lyndhurst and Icaro Consulting were commissioned by WRAP to carry out a programme of research that is informing the development of communications channels for re-use and repair. This work was conducted to ensure communications channels are as effective as possible in encouraging consumers to re-use and repair household items now in the future.

The project built on our combined experience of conducting research in this area. Other examples of our work on re-use and repair include the 3R’s tracker on behalf of WRAP (currently underway) and research for Zero Waste Scotland on the link between re-use and repair behaviours and local service provision.

This research project began with a programme of in-depth interviews to understand where, how and why consumers search for information about re-use and repair. The insight generated was used to inform the development of a questionnaire survey which will be administered by telephone to a representative sample of 2,000 UK consumers.

The qualitative and quantitative findings were analysed to identify a series of suggestions for WRAP to improve new and existing re-use and repair communications channels, such as the Recycled Products Guide or the Recycle Now website.
